What is Nordic Walking?
Nordic Walking is a great health-promoting activity, using around 46% more calories than regular walking, and is great for increasing energy, fitness, toning up and improving your sense of wellbeing.
Nordic Walking uses poles in order to add two major benefits to walking:
- The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs
- The poles help to propel the walker along – this means you can walk faster, working harder than usual, therefore, increasing your fitness/stamina, yet the support given by the poles makes it feel easier! And it is easier on the joints.
Nordic Walking Is Not Trekking
Note: Nordic Walking is a specific fitness technique and is not to be confused with trekking, hill walking or trail running as the poles are not planted in front of the walker/runner but in a specific way that increases the use of the upper body.

Janet was introduced to Nordic Walking whilst on holiday in Scotland. She attended a taster session and enjoyed the experience. Returning home she discovered Johanna’s classes at Ally Pally in October 2012 and has been Nordic Walking ever since. In February 2013 Janet qualified as a Nordic Walking Community Instructor/Walk Leader and now helps Johanna.
Patricia Baresch Nordic Walking Instructor
I’d been interested in Nordic Walking for some time before I found Johanna’s session over 3 years ago. Her Tuesday evening session worked perfectly with my work schedule at the time. I gave up my Primary school teaching job 18 months ago and decided to train as an instructor which I completed in spring 2015. On a recent holiday my husband remarked on the more toned nature of calf muscles and derriere. Way to go!!!!
What Our Outdoor Bootcamp Classes Clients Are Saying
Nordic Walking … It’s become addictive
I was struggling to find a class I could do with my achillies, knee and lower back issues. I was given a 7 day class taster pass and so decided to try Johanna’s Nordic Walking Classes.
I hadn’t a clue what Nordic Walking was but I turned up at Ally Pally got the Poles and did it!
It’s become addictive!
The poles support you so theres no stress on your joints. You can go faster and further.
I’ve got a renewed vigor!
I’ve just come back from walking the Tour Mont Blanc, 180km in 11 days! When I agreed to do it I panicked!
I got in touch with Johanna and it was the best preparation I could have done for the walk in the Alps.
Although Alexandra Palace isn’t the Alps, I was able to push myself and it paid off.
My legs were stronger and able to cope with the inclines and declines and I was able to use the walking poles with ease.
I’ve come back stronger and fitter and with a renewed vigor. Thank you Jo.
Nordic Walking … meet everyone’s differing ability levels.
When I joined Johanna’s classes I was trying to get back into exercise but had lost the motivation to go to the gym.
I quickly found that exercising outside in the fresh air is so much more fun and that I was regularly making time to fit the classes into my routine.
I learnt Nordic walking with Johanna 3 years ago and have been enjoying coming to the classes ever since.
Nordic Walking is great exercise, the classes are really sociable and Johanna is excellent at adapting our walks to meet everyone’s differing ability levels.
